These art pieces are a collage of both kirigami (cut paper) and origami (folded paper), with other handmade papers, natural elements and other embellishments. Sumi’e style paint strokes add a sense of movement to an otherwise still life composition. A bit of Japanese calligraphy print is put into each piece to add a further ethnic touch which, I feel, prevents predictability or symmetry. This process uses about a dozen steps, including matting and framing. One piece can take several hours to complete.
The designs shown in the gallery are just a example of mostly one-of-kind work. The categories are cranes, kimonos, fish, fans, lanterns, abstracts, cherry blossoms, gingko/bodhi leaves and combinations. My newest design uses bamboo pieces which represents strength. Framed sizes range from 8” x 10” to 30” x 40”.
